   BTW, compared to other cartoon characters’ parents (“Agnes” “Calvin & Hobbes”), Fritzi is the only guardian who actually loves her charge.

    If she could do better, why hasn’t she? And what do you consider better? He seems to me like a really nice guy (I’m not familiar with the earlier strips where he had a wandering eye).
