This is what’s known as clean humor; he cleaned ’em out, and it was funny.

I am curious to read the very last comic strip of Mutt & Jeff. Did it announce the end of the comic like “Out of the Gene Pool” did or it just petered out?

First time I shot craps I was 15 years old and the guys at my Dad’s tire shop started a game after work

At 25 cents a throw, a few beers and a few hours later I had won $25 from the older guys

All Dad had to say about it on the way home was “Don’t tell your mother”

It’s interesting how bosses and others of authority in Mutt and Jeff are often attired, whiskered, etc. in a late 19th or very early 20th century style. Was that typical of the 30s and 40s?

There were a few old timers in 1935 who had beards, but men were mostly clean shaven. One old man, with a beard and mustache, used to come to our store and buy McCuan’s Chewing tobacco, my Dad chewed and smoked “Mechanic’s Delight”. The men in the roaring 20s were mostly clean shaven. Beards were popular in 1880 and 1890s, Mustaches, only, came in around 1900 to 1915 , Men were more shaven due to WW1 and the prevalence of lice in the trenches.

Don’t you feel that Jeff’s boss resembles Teddy Roosevelt?

Jeff made more $ in 3 hours playing dice than he did on his job. He was probably making about .75c an hour back in those days.

I think it’s more an artistic convention, visual shorthand to identify a character type.

He did it on company time so it goes to the boss.
