    That was the problem with telegrams – it required a man at both ends of the circuit at the same time, both being paid.
    Edison was working on a machine where a telegram could be sent, but be recorded at the other end and be “downloaded” by a operator at a more convenient time, thus avoiding having operators idle so much of the time.
    The offshoot of this research was the phonograph!
