Before they put a padlock on it (required by corporate), I used to pull gallons of milk out a dumpster at a local pharmacy, usually 2 days before the expiration date.
This was in the winter of 2011-2012, so the milk kept outside rather well. I could keep it in a refrigerator in my garage (plugged in) and it would keep several days past the expiration date.

Years ago, in San Jose, CA, a retired Marine was “dumpster diving” at various supermarkets, gleaning food for homeless shelters. Safeway and others, cooperated, donating edible foodstuffs. Does that still happen or have the health Fascists stopped that?

For years, the sandwiches that were not sold at the Memorial golf tournament were given to home shelters and other charities nightly. Then the health department said that the unsold sandwiches had to be town away in the trash. The tournament organizers were never able to correct this insanity.
