I suspect that a fair number of the recruits (at least the male ones) are attracted because they expect to be rewarded for perpetrating those particular three acts. In lives where they feel weak, they now expect to become “powerful”.
I doubt that it occurs to them that they will be slaves themselves, allowed to do only what they’re told to do and not allowed to hold or express independent opinions, upon pain of death.
