It’s not really the west that is buying the ivory.
    .
A loophole in the UN law regulating the ivory trade allows Japan and China to legally purchase some ivory from selected nations under tightly controlled contracts. This has encouraged poachers to smuggle their illegal goods to Asia. Once there, it’s much easier to unload them.

Yesterday I saw a picture of an elephant hit by a train in India inside the Buxa Tiger Reserve. The story said that at night they have people watching out for elephants, but they don’t watch in the daytime.
It killed the elephant and dented up the train.

Because you would say he’s wasting money.
I know you right wingers don’t care about ecology because it reduces your profits, but I gotta live on this planet.

SAD! The Duke of Cambridge, Prince William spoke out on this issue March 4th, speaking to world leaders to help save the last remaining rhinos and elephants.

As long as there is money to be made, elephants will be poached, and other endangered animals will be slaughtered, perhaps to extinction. There are downsides to unfettered capitalism, but at least there are people who are making money.

And in some circles, the ability to make money trumps any other concern.

“And in some circles, the ability to make money trumps any other concern.”

Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to get those circles to openly admit it.

The TOONist is trying to give a guilt-trip to the wrong people. Go talk to the UN and the Asian Nations.
