It’s not as if this is every going to be of any use to you later in life.

Early means of sorting out the bullies from the victims.

You’re thinking of Les, who long ago became the real star of Funky. Maria started out in the right position, but thrashed around too much.

Being scared of heights I so hated the rope.

I couldn’t climb that darned rope either. Hated the days that the ropes were down in P.E.. My best friend could easily climb them though (and she definitely wasn’t a bully, just had a lot to do with body type). On the other hand, I was much better at other activities, usually involving a ball.

I always ended up with rope burns.

There is a trick to make it easier. Using your feet, loop the dangling rope over one foot and stand on it with the other. All you need to do is press your feet together and you can stand and rest as long as you want before resuming climbing. Friction will keep you from sliding down the rope while resting.

It isn’t the height as much as looking down at open space that bothers me. I get the feeling I’m being sucked over the edge. We also had hardwood poles to climb besides ropes.

What I hated even more, with all my hate, was the rings. My nightmare was being forced to do a ‘skin the cat.’ It wasn’t on me to do.

It’s worse than Mount Everest. You’ve got to have a lot of arm strength for this, which few in our gym class had. Rings? Forget about it. That would be a joke to put those up and have no one able to use them. My dad’s generation, however, could do that stuff. They were a lot stronger.
