As Mark Twain once said, ‘The most important thing in life is sincerity … once you can fake that, you’ve got it made!’

“I shall strive to be the best me I can be”—-that can mean many different things to different people . . .

We see what it means to Maria.

    Think globally, act selfishly.

I don’t know who that is. John will have to speak for himself!

I have no idea who that is either…

Some of the worse people in the world were sincere. They were doing it to help us too. Still didn’t change the horror of it all.

So that confirms that there was no intentional ripoff! Now the question is- why?

He seems to be the guy who wrote Desiderata. Its last line is strive to be happy. Thant’s not what Maria is proposing at all, in my opinion.

Well I do remember Desiderata- but I don’t know if I could have come up with the name of the writer of it.

I had to google the name to make the connection. My personal memory of the Desiderata poem was a sappy poster common back in my hippy days in San Francisco, and as such, had no place among my many posters which were best enjoyed under the illumination of a black light while using certain substances that were ubiquitous at the time out there.

I prefer the National Lampoon version, Deteriorata.

    (includes Desiderata for comparison)

As Robin Williams said “You can fool some of the people and jerk the rest off.”

I remember the poster well. Seemed like it was everywhere in the late 60’s/early 70’s.
