The sentiment for Trump and Sanders is evidence that the two party system is not serving the public as it is expected to.Unpopular, unlikable candidates have resulted in low turnout elections of extremists who then delude themselves into thinking they represent the majority, ignoring the approval polls that place them in the low teens. The laws that are made by this group of legislators, while the handiwork of extremists, is presented as the majority’s will, and they get very angry when a jury is informed of the right of jury nullification that can be used to overturn these bad laws. In my state, the largest portion of voters are registered as unaffiliated, yet the primaries remained closed, to shelter the extremists from public censure and perpetuate their narrowly focused ideology. There is no real way to get past the need to select the lesser of two evils … the “lesser evil” bar seemed to be raised at each successive election.I hope that some good comes of Trump and Sanders pointing out the deficiencies of the status quo.
