The coterie of conservative/Republicans that are against common sense regulation of guns in the hands of the public is just astonishing. How can they ignore the 45 school shootings that have occurred so far this year; the 294 mass shootings in 2015; the 276,900 gun deaths by other Americans since approximately 9/11? (But about $1 trillion spent, much of it for armaments, on trying to prevent about 50 from being killed by terrorists.) Why does not 26 beautiful children slaughtered at Sandy Hook by an identifiably disturbed person using an assault rifle resonate with them? Why do they not demand their children be protected, or that the way to protect the little darlings is not to have more guns? Why is the protection of the profits of the gun manufacturers more important than the every-day safety of people? Why do they defend the highly questionable interpretation of the second amendment with almost messianic zeal? Why does the public need assault rifles or high capacity, high speed magazines? Why are not universal background checks acceptable? Why do they not scream to the high heavens for legislators to do something? And the answer we get from their aspiring would-be leaders is, “Well, stuff happens.” Not just astonishing, but disgusting!
