So. The thing about school choice is, that it is often the liberal/left/progressive/Democrat side of the coin that is against it. Yet those that are able to do so often choose to send their children to private, parochial, or boarding school. Often because the local schools are horrible.
Meanwhile, there are black single mothers in Boston waiting, hoping, and praying that their children get into the local charter school because the city of Boston’s public schools are so deplorably bad, they want better for their children. How daaaaaaaaare they.
Now, one of our children goes to our local public schools because they are best equipped to teach their needs – exceptionally gifted, and not in the braggard parent way. However the city next to us has deplorable schools. A private school 24 miles away has a school bus that will pick the kids up in that city and drive them to the school because the schools are that bad.
The teachers unions get a bad wrap. Certainly there are a lot of bad apples and people that just don’t give a damn, but teaching begins at home. However many of these public schools, especially in the bigger cities, are horrible. Violent, horribly run, financially mismanaged, spending exorbitant amounts of money “per pupil”, and achieving atrocious results year after year, decade after decade. It ain’t like it happened overnight, and nothing is improving.
So why shouldn’t a parent opt to say “you know what? You’ve had a decade to get your act together and improve, you have not. Our children deserve better than what you are giving them.”
