Mr. Pett’s cartoon is exquisite. It almost encompasses nearly every abuse our cannibalistic two party oligarchy commits in their effort to maintain their job security in congress while building up their ‘resume’ for the lobbying and/or corporate jobs they will take after they leave office. Jobs whose pay will be supplemented with the very generous ‘pension’ and healthcare benefits Congress has given itself for even after they leave office.
The cartoon shows the disrespectful and uncivil bullies these two parties have become as they divide and weaken our nation (as per Geo Washington’s warning).
Until Americans quit allowing themselves to be distracted by the fear tactics and impossible social issues, we will not be able to elect people who will keep the bridges, power grids, and other important (and costly) matters to which our nation MUST give attention.
    Respectfully,
    C.

Climate Change, Global Warming, Nuclear Proliferation, and Overpopulation might be combining to form a Reset Button. Maybe another species will emerge and do better than the primates have done.

    “Support Term Limits”

We already have term limits, but we call it voting. The problem is the electorate as a whole doesn’t care enough to pay attention or to get its collective fat @#$ off the sofa long enough to vote. I work with people who are proud of the fact they’ve never in their lives voted. One particular cow-orker can’t even name the current VP, or his predecessor. The reason the government got this dysfunctional is the people stopped caring and stopped voting ages ago.

“democracy” is a bad thing. Mob rules mentality. that is why we are a Nation of rules and laws. We are also a representative republic. get a clue Pett of how we work as a Nation.

A big problem with an easy solution: Remove ALL private money from politics. Draft rules to fund candidates who meet certain criteria. And make it an act of treason to accept a single private dollar while performing in a political position- heck, file one treason charge for EACH private dollar accepted.
Yes, easy solution- but unless there’s a groundswell of support unmatched in American history, such a change would have to make its way through the political system… which would be like expecting a crowd of heroin addicts to support tougher drug laws.

So the Democrats are the “Security State” party? The dems are the party of the fearful? (As depicted by the shivering donkey).
    .
What a load of elephant dung!
    .
We were delivered the "Security State by the Republicans and their “Terror Alert” system that could NEVER even be just Yellow, but always a shade of orange up to and including red.
    .
To distort history and say it was the Democrats that traded freedom for security is blatant NEWSPEAK!
    .
I’m disgusted by Joel Pett and all of you all who don’t (didn’t) excoriate him for this LIE.

Talk about not seeing the forest for the trees. Both parties are equally guilty of every offense depicted. Perhaps the Republicans invented the security state, but “our” guy (and his party) are following in their footsteps.

In places where term limits have been tried, they’ve failed as most predicted they would. The only ones who know how government operates are lobbyists. Everyone else is an amateur. What we REALLY need is to get money out of politics with public funding of elections and ANY contributions to politicians treated as the bribery that it is.

Its far more complex than that….term limits…..not the solution.
Campaign and campaign finance reform, IMO, a solution.
    Truth, NOT money.

    @Jase99

This is definitely one of the reasons behind the problem…
The people must know that democracy dies when the people do not participate…
    Maybe voting should be mandatory.

    .
Ok, so what happens if the representatives for one party skews the rules and laws in their favor, at the behest and manipulation of non-representative masters who also control how the media exposes that information? Said party entrenches their rules and laws for their favor, and not for the good of their constituents.

    BS!
    .
The political correctness of false equivalency is 100% Grade A Manure!
    .
The Democrats have been fighting a losing battle against the Republicans for decades now, but somehow, in your world, they are just as guilty.
    .
That is ridiculous and can be dismissed out of hand, just by virtue of the mathematics of the situation!
    .
Don’t like math? Ask yourself this… Are you as afraid now as you were 8 years ago?
    .
How did the nation respond to Boston? What was the Boston refrain? “Boston Strong!” Massachusetts; Blue state that it is, set the tone, “We are not afraid!” ( and good on them for it).
    .
When the Republicans were in charge they were afraid that Liberty’s Aluminium Boob was going to destroy America. Everything was a threat, even French Fries were a danger until they were renamed “Freedom Fries” (where “Freedom” was the freedom not to accept opinions that didn’t toe to the mark of the parties’ platform).
    .
When have the Democrats EVER done such things?
    .
Forest? Trees? The evidence to my POV is as numerous as the leaves on all the trees in all the forest. (devil’s in the details)
