BTW: Does anybody knows why the drop of a ball is used to signal the beginning of the new year? I do :-)

In order to find your longitude on the ocean you need a clock that is synchronized with the clock at the meridian (0°). Before radio etc. that synchronization was done at every harbor around noon by firing a shot from a cannon (to get attention) and shorty afterwards dropping a ball from a mast atop a tower. All ships in visual range could then set their clock to 12:00 and sail on.

Laying in harbor and setting the clock every 24h also gave you an idea about the drift of your clock and a chance to correct it. It was the best they could do, clocks were rubbish back then, Charles Darwins ship “Beagle” hat 17 clocks on board, some of them on loan from manufacturers who wanted to know how accurate they were. Unbelievable in todays world of GPS and NTP

I would have loved to see my taxes drop instead of rising. But I must be in the income bracket that dems demand have to ‘pay more’ or ‘pay their fair share’ while 47% don’t pay fed taxes every April.

Keep an eye on your paycheck this month for a little gift from the Obama administration. Didn’t he promise he’d only raise taxes on the rich?

Must be great swimming in all that money!
But then your 4% tax increase was less than Reagan’s tax increase.
But when you get all your information on the faux noise bus you arent really living in the real world.

    From the article:
    []
Speaker of the South Carolina House Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, says the article from Forbes is wrong, especially in calling members of the military, public employees and retirees “takers”.

Thanks for clarification, however it does not mean that it should not be a concern.
