Our binary political system, evidently mandated by the constitution, does not allow the parties to compromise on issues such as immigration and funding social security in a time of dwindling population growth. (Seems like one problem could be a solution to the other.) We allowed our representatives to index legislation to fixed dollar amounts rather than a more thoughtful ratio metric approach which would sustain important programs over the long run. Paradoxically, we admire Walmart for its efficiency in stocking only the useful items, yet we retain in our government people and policies that add no value. The electorate should be more objectively informed and a spotlight –- in the form of measured results –- should be directed at those people and policies in government whose value is deficient. There are some great ideas from each party that could benefit the American people if only the superposition of ideologies were allowed by the constitution.
