Trump just wants to undo Obama achievements. If he could get a deal with North Korea that is 1/10 as comprehensive (and verifiable) as Obama got with Iran (plus five other nations), you would never hear the end of his bragging (well, we’ll never hear the end of his bragging anyway).
Now all he has to offer is a record of breaking treaties, alienating our allies and freeing Iran to re-start their nuclear build-up.
In the past, sanctions worked because they were multi-national because Iran was a pariah rogue nation. Now Trump has made the United States the pariah rogue nation.
And if Trump is the only country imposing sanctions (no longer multi-national), it will just mean American companies lose business. Boeing has already lost a $20 million contract (first of many, I’m sure) for planes that will now be made by Europe’s Airbus.
Wow, breaking nuclear disarmament treaties is certainly going to engender confidence in his promises, not to mention say “bye, bye” to any fantasies about a Nobel Peace Prize.
