   Tue – Lag isn’t a factor here. The UAVs are not armed with simple bombs, but with precision guided missiles. The missiles are “fire-and-forget” – they can lock in on the target and need no further guidance. This isn’t to say that they may have been set to the wrong target, or that malfunctions don’t happen – only that operator judgement on when to push the button isn’t an issue.

   Loiter time means shift changes on the “pilots” means one more capacity for “communication failures” to occur, means “false positives” lead to more “collateral damage”. I’d rather have an A-10 with an on board pilot any day “backing me up”. Of course, they’re converting A-10s to be a mobile platform to stand off, and let a back seater launch missiles against targets, so no “eyes on”, just trust the electronics. It’s nice to know that computers never crash, or screw things up, right.
