I’ve always wondered why the players don’t have swords, tridents, and nets? It would make the game much more interesting.

(And having a few hungry lions and bears on the field would help, but I guess we already have those?)

Well I have said it before but it is the armor they wear now a days. So violence is winning out over strategy. No matter what you do a helmet can not protect the brain which is flouting in your head. But you keep putting these armored up 300 400 pounds of flesh out there as if they are invincible because they believe the armor will protects them. Then you have an all out clash of amor. no short term hurt that will take them out, but just look at the long term damage. Now compare the long term to say Rugby. It is even more “violent” in some regards. Short term broken bones and some blood and such. Long term? Not so much. But they use twice the strategy in a play then your typical, line them up and crash them together football.

I just don’t really see the draw in watching a bunch of large men wearing tights grapple each other in a grassy field. But I’m told it’s “manly”….

They should also put real death in “sudden death overtime!” That would definitely draw an audience!
