    I heard Obama’s press secretary say that the US will definitely force regime change in Syria, but by political rather than military means.

    Could someone please explain what the heck that means? I can’t figure it out.

    I see the French are talking big about Syria but will probably leave someone else (us) holding the bag when the going gets tough. Meanwhile, where the hell are the Arab states in all of this? It’s their neighbourhood, they should be taking out their own trash.

    They can’t. They’re busy making the trash. Many of them can’t wait to annex what used to be Syria, and are pretending to be “freedom fighters” against Assad, hoping to drag us into it and let us finish what they started.

    David Brooks in the NYT today has some interesting thoughts on this.

    Yesterday a jet dropped a napalm or thermite bomb on a playground and the BBC had graphic pictures.
    It looks like the Syrian regime wants the US to attack.
    Also Assad’s young son said so on a social media page.
    Mouths of babes, and all that.

    That’s an interesting article, a little smarter than Brooks usually manages. But I wonder if there’s a slight contradiction — at one point Brooks says, “We could have intervened in Syria back when there was still something to be done and some reasonable opposition to mold”, but then towards the end he quotes Ryan Crocker to the effect that major outside interventions might only make things worse. I think Obama has been wisely trying to stay out; but his red line comment, though understandable, was probably a mistake. I predict he will do the minimum he can and still say that he did something. Personally, I think he should do nothing, even if it makes him look a little silly. Or rather, not nothing, but nothing military. There are other options. I don’t support US military action there now.

    I just read a commentary by Charles Tannock (EU official) suggesting a no-fly zone for Syria:
    Syria No-fly zone?

    That might be a way to go. It might result in fewer civilian deaths than even a limited bombing program.

    Sometimes Darfur just happens. The solution shouldn’t always be an America one.

    Arabs and Asians supported and tolerated the situation in the Sudan. Arguably America might have done more in Darfur, but how broad does America’s shore have to extend when it can’t even manage its own economic problems and infrastructures?http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/13/AR200602008.html

    @ahab

    Before some gleeful troll erupts to tell me that the Sudan isn’t Syria, I’m well aware of that fact, and I’m using Darfur as an example.
