He only won 43% of the Democratic primary vote (http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/was-the-democratic-primary-a-close-call-or-a-landslide/) — and that was among Democrats. He would never have come close to that in a general election — he would have done worse than Hillary because of the “socialist” bug-a-bear. She had at least the potential to win over some moderate Republicans and he never would have been able to do that.
