I have yet to meet anyone that when face with what they consider dire circumstances has not turned to God. I have meet those that have denied doing so but they where called on it but those who know them best. And it can be said that people without religion are evil, soul dead, deluded and self-destructive.

Atheists don’t start wars over which God they don’t believe in.

Okay, so your sample is how big? And how reliable? I can tell you that both my parents thought of themselves as atheists right up to the end.

You say, “It can be said that people without religion are evil, soul dead, deluded and self-destructive.” Yeah, it can be said. Anything can be said. I can say that a square is round, but it’s not true. I could say something equally nasty about religious people, but I won’t. Anyway, I guess I’m just an evil, soul dead, deluded and self-destructive person, and I’ll have to live with it.

Neither do Christians or Jews or Hindus or well wait. It would be easier to list those that do start wars for the God of their choice.

Perhaps. But, even if you are correct, it helps people make sense of things that they just don’t understand. Why do you wish to take that away from other people?

Tell that to Lenin, Stalin, the Khmer Rouge, Mao Tse Tung, Mengele, any number of South American or African dictators… Sorry, but there are just as many victims of ‘rational’ despots as there are of religous ones.

The idea that religon is behind all humanity’s troubles and all wars is absurd. Man is quite capable of being evil, destructive, and delusional all on his own.

Religon isn’t the enemy. It’s the intolerant and those who lust for power that are the enemy. And, yes, there are some athesits who fit that role.

Agreed. Whatever gets you through the night.

“Why do you wish to take that away from other people?”

While I cannot speak for DrCanuck, I can say from having read many of his posts that I do not get the impression he/she wants to take anything away from others. On the contrary, it has been my experience, and likely his/hers, that those who are most religious are the ones most willing to attempt to force their views on those who do not believe the same thing.

You are correct. Religion is not the enemy. The intolerant and those who lust for power are indeed the enemy. And those who justify their lust for power and their intolerance by telling us their god gave them the right to be that way are the greatest enemies. Bigotry and hatred in the name of religion is still bigotry and hatred.

Elmo wrote Mr. Majestyk, a man who only wanted to start a melon farm and gets in to a gang war. Charles Bronson played the Majestyk. Long time sense I read the book or saw the movie, both are good.

I don’t disagree at all. But the same can be said of those who use jusitications of nationality, political stance, or even science.

I will admit religon has some of the more spectacular examples, but that seems to be changing as the power hungry jump ship from religon to take up other banners.

I also object to the stereotyping russell5419 seems to be engaing in. I also don’t agree with the belief that religon has no positives to it. Nor do I agree with the growing belief that aetheism is somehow going to be the cure all which will lead to world peace.

No matter which side is right or wrong, mankind is responsible for it’s actions. Blaming a god, particularly one you don’t believe in, for man’s atrocities is just using a scapegoat. And ridiculing those who believe a different way than you do…and yes, this does go for the religous who persecute atheists as well as atheists who call the religous foolish or delusional…is just a form of power mongering.

Bigotry and hatred in the name of whatever cause you may support is still bigotry and hatred.

Don’t you mean Islam?I don’t think anyone else has taught that sort of thing about non believers for a several hundred years.I don’t think any other religion makes their women wear bee keeper suits and beats them if they wear underwear.

Depends on the Religion, anything ran by man will have issues. Placing all religion together like that is foolish.
