Actually, summer vacation is a hold-over from America’s agricultural roots. On family farms, the kids were needed to help tend crops from planting to the harvest and so many kids went absent from school during the summer that school officials simply bowed to the inevitable. There is some talk these days about making school year round. I cannot imagine the howls of protest on the part of the students should this change ever be made.

Shorten summer vacation, maybe. End it? Never! Even teachers need a vacation.

Summer vacation…summer vacation….? I seem to recall something about summer vacations. Heck ANY vacation has become a distant memory!

In parts of Colorado, year-round school is a system of four tracks/schedules. Three run concurrent with one taking a three-four week break. There is usually one track that is the same as the conventional school year. Everybody has a “Winter” break, though some tracks may have a shorter one, one week vs two.

Currently it is only for the elementary (K-6) grades, as sport schedules would conflict with other districts for the secondary schools.

We loved having a non-conventional track when our child was in elem,, meant we could go on vacations when 90% of the country was in school.

That’s the schedule I’ve been on for 45 years. Works well, except your life sure motors past when broken into 13 week intervals!

Not quite. Actually, schools were more often closed in the Spring to help with planting, and in the Fall to help with harvest. Talk of year-’round school is not new; some places have tried it and abandoned it.
Summer vacation will still be around for a long time – let us hope!
