I lived out on a dirt road when I was a kid no street lights to signal, but my dad had a whistle that could be heard for miles. We never got home late.

Our mom rang a cowbell. We were in trouble if we were too far away to hear it.

Grandma knew the same way, just like I did along with most of the kids in the neighborhood I grew up in.

When it became twilight. That’s when the sun is down enough for no shadows and no stars are out yet.

When the sun gets low, and darkness creeps in, you go home. You’ll know this is happening because your playing outside. Without helmets and pads. get a scrape, get a band-aid. Play some more. Hey look, still alive.
