Grand Avenue stars Kate Macfarlane, an avid sports fan who powerwalks to stay in shape. Not your typical cookie-baking granny, Grandma Kate has her hands full with her terrific twosome, who are best buddies even though their personalities clash. Gabby is an ambitious, newspaper-reading little girl who plans to become a billionaire before she's 30. Her brother Michael is a more sensitive soul who prefers riding his skateboard or performing scenes from Shakespeare to just about anything else.

The blame belongs partly to the alleged “parents”, partly to the far “right” and partly to the cheney/shrub NCLB fiasco.

“Sit down and study” only works if the parents want their kids to learn.

I gotta say it was never out of control like that in my elementary school. However, what he’s describing applied to my middle school and to a lesser extent the high school.

They have five minutes left to teach?
It must be an exemplary school. Most schools don’t even teach that much. One of my friends who is a teacher has even had parents brought thier attorney to the parent-teacher conference.

Schools today are day care centers/huber law jails, where some children occasionally learn some marginally useful facts.

@Clark Kent
WTF?
As a former teacher, we can agree on the “alleged parents” bit. Parents were the biggest reason I got out of teaching a decade ago.
As for the rest… the “far right” (and please define that term—does it mean everyone who did not vote Democrat in the last or previous elections?) I doubt had little effect on our kids. Granted, a lot of recent right-wing ideas haven’t been beneficial… Because they were pre-sabotaged by left-wing ideology from the get-go.
Another good reason to get out of teaching…
