    Cakes have feelings, slam the oven door while it’s baking and watch crater.

    Don’t worry. By the time meat is made into burgers it’s already dead. The feelings have long gone. Same with veggies. By the time they’re picked and process, there’s not a bit of life left in them. Wait a minute! If plants have feelings, this might be the perfect excuse not to mow my lawn.

    Carrots are biannual plants. f you pant a carrot with some green stalk still attached to the orange root, it will grow. Thus, peeling a carrot is “skinning it alive” which should be of great concern to vegans. Also think of boiling potatoes alive.
    The French word for vegetables is “legumes” that can be loosely translated as “let go of me”, again, indicating that vegetables can communicate. ;-)

    @dook

    So we shouldn’t eat vegetables. I’m swearing off and changing to BBQ.

    Only Slim (of mind) would think of such a thing.

    Actually, Dook, plants CAN communicate, and therefore we should kill them “humanely” before we eat them, same as we should do with animals… which we don’t (unless they’re “free range” or kosher).

    Yes, peeling a carrot IS skinning it alive, just as boiling a potato can’t be pleasant for the potato… but I expect it will be the same for a lobster, and we have to eat.

    And btw, “legumes” canNOT be translated as “let go of me”, even loosely, I don’t know where you got that. “Legumes” HAS translated into English to mean something else, as it often happens.

    re: lisa brouillette

    Plants release chemicals that cause reactions in nearby plants of the same species, and sometimes other species. It’s an automatic response like a computer. Or in the same plant. Gypsy moth eats leaves off an oak. the next year the oak will produce more tannins to try to make itself taste bad. But there’s no mental component. No nervous system.

    Cats on the other hand, have a nervous system and a personality. I’d just gotten done writing the bit on plants and suddenly thought of my cat. Went to the back door and she wanted in. I’d love to know how they get their message across like that.
