Enough republications realized the house cleaning that would follow.
Still, it was passed, even if only for the self interest of the individuals wanting re election.
Would have been better if they passed the bill for the good of the country instead of their pockets, but at least we are getting there.

No need to bully old WW2 vets going to their memorial or letting kids rot with cancer for Obama’s glory.

But never held the country hostage the way the tea potty did.
And no, the “republican House” did not pass the debt ceiling raise, although they did spend the money.
The Democrats passed it with 25 republican votes, so they can go back to their gerrymandered districts and lie about not wanting the increase but what could they do?

While I’ll agree Obama is a bad president, I still can’t hang that one on him. So he changed his position. Politicians on both sides do it all the time. And so do people in their day to day lives. I’m not going to fault anyone for rethinking a position.

Now, whether or not the new position is a good one…that’s a different story.

It was a stupid, thoughtless idea in October.
    Age hasn’t improved that stinker.

The House passed the debt ceiling, but not the Republican House.

Overtaxed said: “The mail gets delivered.”

The U.S. Postal Service is not affected by shutdowns because it makes it’s money through postal-related sales and services, not taxes.

    “The roads are still maintained.”

Depends on which roads you’re talking about. Municipal (city or town) roads are the responsibility of the city or town that they’re in. County roads are the responsibility of the county that they’re in. State roads are the responsibility of the State that they’re in. U.S. and Interstate highways are the responsibility of the Federal government (the “Gummint” to you, no doubt), but are generally maintained by local (municipal or State) government. (And then usually by private contractors.) Now, the Federal “Gummint” (i.e. the Department of Transportation) does make grants available to build and maintain roads and bridges; but those projects CAN BE STOPPED if the money runs out during a shutdown.

“The garbage is picked up on garbage day.”

That’s a municipal or County responsibility and has nothing to do with the Federal “Gummint”.

“The stop and go lights still function.”

Again; a municipal, County or State responsibility depending on which entity is responsible for that particular road.

“Commuter trains subsidized by government still derail or crash.”

As do Municipal and County Buses and Regional Transportation Authority light-rail trains. I fail to see how this particular complaint is relevant to any of those that you made above. (Other than as an incredibly lame “I hate Gummint!” joke.)

Wow, is Varvel that confused that he doesn’t know that the GOP wanted an caused the government to shutdown? Again, rhetorical.
