No, that would be complacency and voter apathy.

Football: War Lite! For when our REAL war machine is in its offseason (however seldom that happens).
Also, George Carlin’s skit about the differences between baseball and football is still hilarious.

Well,,,,, it IS a bit less violent than the Gladiatorial Games of ancient Rome were!
And what American males (and not a few females as well) not seen themselves getting through the line, and running free down the field to a “Touchdown!!” to the screams and approbation of the crowds?
Of course, by the time you are in your seventies as I am, it no longer seems quite so important anymore……sigh!

The metaphor is sadly accurate to “American mentality” with regard to violence, and rationale for wars.

There is something to be said about a moment of glory, but it is transitory and then you have to deal with the results.
    .
The bigger story, however, is that on August 29th the NFL settled a combined lawsuit brought by more than 4,500 players over head trauma. The settlement appears to be a pretty good deal for all involved: the NFL admits no liability or wrongdoing, and retired players who have suffered “cognitive injuries” get $765m (if that sounds like a lot of money, remember that the NFL generates around $10 billion in revenue each year). The NFL will also pay legal costs and establish “a separate research and education fund” of $10m. Retired players will undergo medical exams, and if they show evidence of cognitive injuries, they get money from the settlement pool. Individual awards are capped at $5m for players suffering from Alzheimer’s, $4m for deaths from chronic traumatic encephalopathy and $3m for players suffering from dementia.

Where are the Liberals in charge of all this? It is the Conservatives busy enacting our down fall as a Republic.
