I was crossing the Mackinac Bridge from the UP with two other soldiers, on the way to Grayling to work with the Michigan National Guard. One of them being a tanker and the other an infantryman. Anyway, long story short the tanker was freaking out and lay down on the floor in the back before we even got on the bridge. Wouldn’t sit up until we were on terra firma downstate.

Just avoid driving a Yugo over it.

So Frazz is set in Michigan? Well, as an Ohio native, I am not happy……………………………………..

What is the word the local folks use to describe those who are afraid to drive over it?? I watched an interesting segment on this bridge on the CBS Morning Show decades ago.

Jesse, I forget if I ever knew what they were called, but there used to be (still are?) for-hire drivers available for the acrophobes.

Last time I crossed that bridge was on a motorcycle… in the left lane (the one that’s steel grating rather than pavement)… looking down. It’s a pretty cool sensation.

    “set in Michigan—”
Not necessarily. The kid is going to cross the bridge— maybe on a trip thru there, on the way from somewhere to somewhere else.

Puddleglum, I refuse to drive on the that grating…Way too creepy….After crossing one time, my bike rack fell off on Highway 2 a few minutes later. I can’t imagine what it would be like if it had happened in the center of the bridge….I would have had to get out of the car…I did walk across it on Labor Day one time though….

I live about 3000 miles from Michigan, but have been across the Mackinac once, driving a 34’ Winnebago towing a 15’ car in a howling cross wind. Can’t think of any reason to ever do that again.

Is this Mallett’s attempt at drawing an Asian child? I certainly hope not.

I’ve driven over the Mackinaw bridge on motorcycles many times. It’s an interesting experience with the tires squirming over the steel grates as they try to get a grip, while the wind gusts around you. And then this bridge is high in the air for the complete experience. The Upper Peninsula is a beautiful region.
