    @Mr Nobody

    I think Ray Bradbury was in a very depressed mood when he wrote that.

    I didn’t like it as a story when I first read it, and I didn’t like it this time either.

    In fact, the only story of his I really liked was “Fahrenheit 451.” I did like some of “The Martian Chronicles,” but even they got very gloomy.

    His The Fog Horn is one of his best.

    My favourite Bradbury is Dandelion Wine. And it is perfect summer reading.

    There’s the “White Ice-Cream Suit” or maybe the title didn’t include “White”.
    “Something Wicked This Way Comes” but that’s a book..

    This story has haunted me since I first read it 18 years ago. Whenever we have a few days of rain right in a row, I start to think of how I would have been a different kid without sunshine and the great outdoors. Great reference, Mr. Mallett!

    We read this in 9th grade (many,many years ago) along with Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery.” That one shocked, and then depressed me.

    At least its not “The Veldt”

    I’ve been trying to remember the title “The Lottery” for years!

    For those who haven’t read it, here it is…(fair warning: As PocosDad said this one is shocking and depressing.)

    ”The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson

    I looked it up and it’s “The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit,” though when first published it was “The Magic White Suit.” I remembered it as having “vanilla” somewhere in the title, but that must have been only in the text.

    I’ve wondered whether The Hunger Games were inspired by “The Lottery.” All of the stories (and books) mentioned in these posts have made a lasting impression on me. I don’t think I could pick a Bradbury favorite.

    Magnificent story. What I appreciate most about Bradbury was his impeccable writing technique. Technically speaking he was a wonderful wordsmith.

    Yes, exactly!

    @PocosDad

    Shirley Jackson said she wrote “The Lottery” in just two days. Yes it is depressing, and also reminiscent of the Scape Goat ritual once done by Hebrews many years ago.
