    So Caufield is is always “in the now?” We are supposed to be but our neocortex allows us to recapture the past and think about possible futures. Still he has much to learn and experience.

    I like that line, More brilliance in newness than grace in decay. One time when that would not apply would be with the life cycle. No one says, look at how gracefully that baby sucks his thumb. Although I do stumble at times, then say to myself, “That was smart.”

    Nature’s first green is gold,
    Her hardest hue to hold.
    Her early leafs a flower;
    But only so an hour.
    Then leaf subsides to leaf.
    So Eden sank to grief,
    So dawn goes down to day.
    Nothing gold can stay.

    So in the fall, Caufield says the same thing?

    Seems to me that if he has absorbed and embraced “Be here now”, then he has already learned quite a bit more than people even older than himself.

    Beautiful colors today. Nice illustration of the poem.

    Also he wants to forget things he finds unpleasant like Winter. I do that saves on brain space. At least I think I do. Can never be sure.

    I wonder why Caulfield can’t remember fall that well. It can’t be because of his short attention span. Fall color in Michigan lasts for weeks. Even if his mind were to wander, it would eventually, and repeatedly, return to what’s “in front of [him]”. Any neuroscientists among us who might take a stab?

    As my mom used to say, he’s slept since then.

    Beautiful comic today Jeff. Those few short weeks of spring make the horrid winters memories fade. The great rebirth of the world in all its glory.
    Plus it’s warm. I can never really enjoy fall because it’s cold and I know what’s coming.

    This could easily be a Calvin & Hobbes strip. Reflective, out in nature, slightly self-deprecating. :) Just lovely today!

    I’ll buy that. I was just wondering if there might have been a suggestion of some connection that I wasn’t able to comprehend. I have a short attention span but an extremely vivid memory. Perhaps I was putting things together that Mr. Mallett was not.
