    No kidding. We city folk know better than to go swimming in water that has brain-eating microbes and blood-sucking worms. Besides, there’s enough chlorine in a public pool to kill anything that floats.

    Back in my hometown, so many geese live in the local pond that it’s been closed indefinitely due to being a health hazard.

    Ah, I should have thought of that. Boise is festooned with geese, and its parks with their, ah, emissions.

    The English language misspells the word, “waterfowl.” Shouldn’t it be “water foul”? ;-)

    When I was in junior high school in the late 1970s, we had our swimming class just after a swimming session by special-needs kids.
    One day, there was a piece of feces on the floor of the pool in the 11’ deep end. We all refused to swim in that water even though the swimming teacher (who was also a vice-principal) tried to make us go in the water.
    It got worse when I went to high school. My school was directly across the street from the sewer treatment plant, and my school wasn’t air-conditioned until 2009.

    @Ned Snipes

    He said the High School wasn’t air conditioned until 2009. He said nothing about still being there himself.

    Ashburn, I believe you’ve posted this before, and I’ll repeat my reply to it:
    It’s not just the special needs kids that have pool accidents. Many pools are closed whenever any kid has an accident, and it’s not just special needs kids that have them.
    My brother is multiple-handicapped and special needs, so I’m kind of sensitive to this unnecessary stereoptyping.

    AshburnStadium: Our part of town had a couple of mayors and the head of the (private) utility company, but we weren’t considered rich enough to rate a swimming pool.

    Aspiring to be a 21st Century Rabelais is noble, I guess, but it’s a tough, gross row to hoe.

    I took a water quality class in college. For the class project I compared bacterial counts from different water sources, including the duck and goose covered town pond. Let’s just say everything was clean compared to that. Then I put the nasty water the geese had used through different water purifiers. One of the filters I used had to be thrown away afterwards.
