I hope they let them come down in between.

Just wait until they come to Philadelphia and have to face the Manayunk Wall about a dozen times.

“L’Alpe d’Huez is one of the main mountains in the Tour de France. The climb is 13.8 km at an average 7.9 per cent, with 21 hairpin bends. It was first included in the race in 1952 and has been a stage finish regularly since 1976.”

The above quote came from here:

A 7.9 % grade is an angle of just over 4 and 1/2 degrees. If you don’t think it’s steep, try riding a bicycle up one.

The Manayunk Wall isn’t used in the 3rd week of any race (because there aren’t any in the States), so doesn’t really compare. Also there are harder climbs in Europe than d’Huez, but that’s not the point.

So, why did they have to climb it twice?

The cyclists worry about going down too fast on the wet road twice.

Love Frazz’s NASCAR comment in the last panel! I’ve tried to watch NASCAR, but I just can’t commit to 3 hours of left turns. I know it takes precision teamwork and athleticism from the drivers, but still.

That’s the way the course is laid out. If I remember right, and I’m not sure that I am, the climb it at two different locations.

MAD magazine had a section about making NASCAR more exciting: unmarked land mines on the track. Average speed 1.4 mph.
