Frazz by Jef Mallett follows the adventures of an unexpected role model: an elementary-school janitor who's also a Renaissance man. While he's sweeping the hall, he's whistling Beethoven. Or Lyle Lovett. He paints the woodwork in the classrooms; he paints a Da Vinci on the cafeteria wall. He's a trusted authority figure who is every kid's buddy. He took the janitor's job while he was a struggling songwriter, and when he finally sold a hit song, he decided to stay on at school. Frazz appears in 200 newspapers worldwide, including the Los Angeles Times, Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune and Detroit News. "A few years back, I wrote and illustrated a children's book," says Mallett. "When I was traveling around reading it at school assemblies, I noticed that often, the most respected, best-liked grown-up in the building was the janitor. And I thought, 'Hmm, there's a comic strip in that.'" Often praised for its intelligent wit, gentle spirit and effortless diversity, Frazz won a Wilbur Award from the Religion Communicators Council in 2003 and 2005 for excellence in communicating values and ethics.

I remember playing baseball in the snow in grade school in Kansas. In a storm. But of course, bicycle helmets and fat kids were a long way in the effeminate future.

Baseball in the snow in a storm. New one on me. Sounds similar to mudball the guys used to play in college. On a rainy day they throw themselves around in the rain and mud with a football and claim they’re playing football. After the first play you couldn’t tell the players apart, much less the teams. And after every play someone would lift up a layer of the sweatshirts they were wearing and wipe off the football. When I told my mom about it one time she said that explained a major mystery about my brother’s laundry.

At the end of April in Baltimore at the Old Memorial Stadium, John Lowenstein hit “a homerun into the teeth of a driving snow storm” according to the play by play announcer, who MAY have been Jon Miller. We were having flurries at the time.

I was trying to hit a paper wad with a miniature bat in the English classroom after exams, and accidentally let it loose like that…

surfstuff: reminds me of a CFL game; with seconds to go, a field goal attempt from mid-field (55 yard line in Canada). The kick was high, with a strong tailwind and a driving rain. It had lost all forward momentum from the kick, but the wind carried it through the uprights to win the game.

OK now I’m offended, why is Frazz wearing a Sox shirt when he SHOULD be a Tiger’s fan. GO TIGGIES!!!!

Hey, not so funny. Some little kid at Fenway got carried out when one of the Sox let go of his bat during a game against the Orioles over the weekend and it flew into the stands. That’s why they warn you about flying objects at ballparks.
