We seem to have left the story line of Mike going to visit the grandparents and now we’re back to learning the trumpet (???)

    Love Phil tasting the batter.
    -
Ah. I wondered what it was Phil could be tasting while Elly is pouring something into it.

“For the amount of practicing he does…he’s got a pretty good lip!”
    “You’re telling +ME!”+

That’s Michael — sassy and brassy!

Elly and John cannot afford to have the entire family go visit John’s parents. Since airline fares get more expensive the closer it is to the day of travel; they bought the ticket as soon as they could rather than wait until the last minute. As such, Michael still needs to do something as he will not be getting on the plane for some time.

howtheduck: My guess is that it is homemade ice cream. A day late for Canada Day celebrations.

It would have been great to have a sympathetic and helpful uncle like this. But my only uncle avidly disliked my mother, wasn’t interested in Dad, and shrank away from our family. I never expected any gifts from him of course, even though he and his wife had the big bucks. But one time he gave me a broken key holder with missing snaps. Thinking back on it, you can see at least he was thinking of me. He knew the other siblings would have complained about a gift like that, told the parents, and then he would be shamed. My parental relationship was not on speaking terms. For years I didn’t know what it was. I didn’t even own a key to begin with – I was always locked out of the house.

Mike has a good lip? If he had nothing worthwhile to say I’d declare he takes after his mother! Of course, Elly’s lip should be more swollen from all the times she’s put her foot in her mouth!

Did this story jump back a few months? Checking the date line didn’t help. It’s current dates. Did he ever get on the plane?

That sounds more like a description of John than of Elly.

I asked this question yesterday, and apparently we have to wait a few weeks before we get to the story about Mike visiting his grandparents. For some unknown reason, the author decided to jump around between her Mike stories. It’s confusing, I know.
