Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Our hamsters had trouble getting their “hamster ball” up over the edge of the carpet. It was fun watching them try.

Those hamster balls are really sturdy. They are quite safe in them (personal experience – my kids has a couple of hamsters when they were young).

Lynn’s Notes:
Going back to my friend with the big heart and too many animals: The hamster had one of those transparent exercise balls, which the kids found fascinating – as did the family cat. When the hamster was not inclined to run for his pleasure, the kids encouraged him by rolling the ball themselves. I remember them saying that they wished they could ride in a ball like that, and putting myself in place of the dizzy, disoriented hamster, I thought… yeah… maybe not!

I’ve actually HAD a ride in a ball like that. There was a carnival ride at the state fair last year that did the exact same thing for humans, only in water. (The ball floated in the water; the human inside stayed dry.) It was a lot of fun, but exhausting within a very few minutes!

And at the bottom of the stairs, they wondered why the hamster was asleep.

I thought they only had the hamster for a week.
Shouldn’t he be back in school now?
Or is it a slow week??

Story-time week.

The weekday strips only number six, hence a week in the FBOFW universe could take longer than real-time due to the difference. Also, there can be times they are showing a dialogue that takes a few strips to publish, but would probably only be a few minutes or so in the real world.
