Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Hey, it strengthens her immune system. We used to say that a kid has to eat a pound of dirt by the time he grows up.

all those neat freaks must love this one. great way to acquire an immune system. unlike the American Indians who died from the lack of immunity to European diseases.

@Beleck3: Right, they died because they didn’t eat enough dirt… (shaking my head) Didn’t they teach you anything in History or Biology?

@luckylouie: Right on! And nowadays they wonder where all the allergies come from, with all those “antibacterial” cleaning chemicals they’re using.

Have you wondered why children have this compulsion to eat dirt? Mild infections strengthen the immune system against stronger ones.
-
The antibacterial soaps are helping the process of weakening our immune systems. For on the soaps are too mild so too many bacteria (good and bad) so they are the ones becoming immune!

Lynn’s Notes:
Remember eating snow and believing it tasted like ice cream? If you don’t, you didn’t grow up in a northern climate! The only snow we didn’t eat was yellow!

It must be fresh, untrodden snow!

Eating dirt is also a way for tapeworms to get into your body. Wierd little things like in dirt. On that note, I guarantee if you ever take a course in parasitology you will never again eat a piece of rare meat!
