Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

I agree! And everyone on here seems to think she should be a mix of supermodel, Martha Stewart and Mrs. Cleaver. It’s a comic, and have any of you taken a look around recently (or in the mirror)? Most everyone has some fat around the middle.

Not until APRIL 2018. Have you forgotten why she was named April and how old the other kids were when she was born?

Lynn’s Notes:
Letters came from folks who really did not understand this gag. I’d hoped that the bulge in Elly’s stomach would convey the message. I mean…wasn’t it obvious that she was indeed putting “enough into it?” My editor seemed to understand, as did my mother-in-law. (I passed everything by her because there were times she didn’t get an elephant joke. If Ruth didn’t get a gag, I knew I was going to have to rework it!) Still, I had complaints that this punch line didn’t make sense. I’ll leave it with you. Did you get it??!!

A nice play on words here for a little chuckle.

I got it also! I love this strip, and I have seen it to the end, but I never saw the first few years when the kids were little! So all of these, (so far) are still new to me, and that makes it all that much better! The ending was so nice, I felt like I had just finished a lovely novel! But felt a little empty, that it was over!

Andy Capp drinks an ocean of beer a day, and it’s Elly Patterson who has the gut!
Life can be so unfair!

I also thought it was quite funny. I can’t imagaine any middle-agers not relating. (But Tim Allen did it better in The Santa Clause when the Dr. told him he was putting on a “little weight,” and Tim grabbed his Santa belly, jiggled it, and said, “You call this a ‘little weight’?”)

she’ll never get a Jennifer body no matter how hard she tries

@oldman2013
What is a “Jennifer body”?

I consider myself pretty fit, until I pull on a skin tight base layer before going out in the cold. It does not allow self delusion, and is probably similar in tightness to what Elly is wearing there.

@USN1977
And why would Elly want it?

It’s an unfortunate fact of life that the older women get, the easier it is to acquire little unwanted belly paunches like this . . . and once you do, it’s even HARDER to work them off too. Damned hormones. It’s a real curse!!!
