Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

Wonder if it’s the stuff dentists (like Michael’s dad) prescribe that you should abstain from.

I always loved it when my Dad made my lunch. My mother’s lunches were so boring. I feel bad because we never appreciated them even though she made them everyday, while my Dad got heaps of love when he occasionally made our lunches

Lynn’s Notes:
Lunch is an all-important event. A disagreeable lunch can destroy the rest of an otherwise productive day. When my dad made lunch, I knew I was going to get a tomato and cheese sandwich. This is OK if consumed at the time of assembly, but after a lunch-bucket ride and time in a locker, a tomato and cheese sandwich is horrible. On “dad days,” I should have made my own lunch….but when you’re a kid, complaining is much easier.

Sounds like Lynn’s dad made sandwiches that weren’t the best, but most dads make great lunches because they just grab a bunch of snack bags and throw them in.

My dad always made our lunches but it wasn’t his fault they were boring. He just made them from what we had.

The idea that men were complete incompetents in the kitchen or in doing housework was very popular during the early 1980s when this comic strip was created. The new conservatism was coming into play after the 1960s and 70s, and a lot of women were re-embracing traditional roles. Part of that meant reiterating that men were idiots in domestic affairs, and you see that reflected in this comic strip.

When I was a kid, my lunches consisted almost entirely of Swiss cheese sandwiches.
It got to the point that I was thoroughly sick of Swiss cheese.
But since then, I’ve regained my liking for it; I guess it’s because I make my own lunches now.

Cartoon husbands knew how to make sandwiches(look at Dagwood), it is just that they won’t go to the trouble for their kids. Most kids are picky, and wouldn’t want half of the things in a Dagwood Sandwich.

To pack it correctly, getting the ‘fixings’ for your sandwiches requires an separate sandwich bag. Most parents were too cheap to do that. Nowadays, they can include the leftover condiment packages from takeout food. These kids don’t know how good they have it.

Only my mom made lunch, after 6 years and two more brothers he left. Soon enough I was making my own while mom worked two jobs.

I’m sorry, but I do NOT recommend going to the voting website. Most of the comics are so lame as to be ridiculous and when attempting to vote through facebook, their site basically wants to take over your privacy settings and allow anything THEY want.

I voted over there, and most comics seemed to be a lame sample of what they “plan” to draw (may have been limited to a single panel). I never use my FB ID on sites that I don’t want directly on my page. I registered to the site and voted for our fellow poster, because he did a complete strip that was at least as good as the others I sampled.
