Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

And he doesn’t want to hear what Elly or the kids say… LOL! (because they know him and see him every day and would be honest… almost too much so!)

Exactly: just like my husband who has spent a fortune paying to go to the doctor to end up being told exactly what I told him…

Jean should tell him to ask Elly. She’s the one who has to live with him.

Come to Allegany County, John. You’d fit right in with all the men here.

Lynn’s Notes:
Living in the countryside gave us ample opportunity to walk and run and to explore the hiking trails. I confess, I seldom took advantage. My husband was the one who regularly ran the gauntlet – and whenever possible, he rode his bike to work.

Lynn has said in interviews that her ex-husband was a fitness nut and she often drew his avatar of John Patterson as flabby in order to irritate him.

Probably just Elly. John does not seem to tolerate backtalk from the kids and with good reason.

My mirror doesn’t lie. I know what I am:
I’m an old, fat, gray-headed, freckle-faced, married lady with an odd sense of humor.
