Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

But the ladies are ‘pretty’ on the tv. And mom isn’t? “Moms are just different.” He might say.

Hey the kid see Mom in THAT bathrobe and hairdo and it kills any image of what he sees on TV.

Mike’s gonna need therapy in a few years at this rate! Or – it might be good fodder for his future career as a writer!

So…will Elly continue aerobics class?
Or will she just poop out?

Seeing Elle or any woman in that ‘getup’ would put a hold on any kind of mental imagery in any male at any age. Why do you think John is up and gone before Elle even gets out of bed!!!

@Debbie Jordan
You said: There are certain activities that children, especially boy children, cannot—or do not want to—imagine their parents engaged in, and aerobics exercise is one of them!
-——————————————————And the list grows as they get older.

In time, he’ll learn to not speak every little remark he thinks.

Hey Michael, you should see those TV ladies when they get up in the morning, and before the hair and makeup people re-do them!
@mkdonly1 – Most of us do, but since John hasn’t learned, Michael doesn’t have the best example to follow.

The supermodel Cindy Crawford once remarked that she wished she looked like “Cindy Crawford” when she got up in the morning. The lady is realistic enough to know that it is the work of many people to make her look as glamorous as she does in advertisements.

Lynn’s Notes:
I guess aerobics was one of the first sort of “dancercise” workouts designed to coerce exercise-resistant pork-butts like me to get up and move. I did go to the YMCA here and sign on for one aerobics class, but, WHOA! …. It was such hard work! Still, in a group setting like this, you’re far more likely to put in some effort. The down side of doing aerobics at home… is being caught in the act by someone with a lethal sense of humour.

Bad enough she gets those remarks from her husband, she shouldn’t be getting it from her kids, too. But I guess we know where the brat learned it.
