Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

You know,.some times John can be very
shallow.

@gkid
That’s because men are generally hard-wired to be visually stimulated, so naturally John would notice the woman’s physical attributes above anything else.

Yikes…I started reading the original strip later than this, and never realized what a jerk John could be. LOL He was a lot more mellow later on. If I was Ellie, I would smack him!

Yes. The possiblity is there is a reasonable explanation for this situation.

For a week in the doghouse, John catcalls her.

Most of us guys wouldn’t actually say that with our wife there. Today, they’d say that John has poor impulse control.
.
What’s bad is when you offend someone that you didn’t even know had much interest. One time I offended a woman I knew by mentioning another woman. From her reaction— good thing she didn’t have a knife at her disposal— she apparently thought we were much more than what she’d indicated before that. Ummm, maybe let me know before that? While we men miss signs, there really didn’t appear to be much interest other than friendship. I think the Lord was looking out for me, though, by stopping anything from developing: the general consensus, even among her countrymen, was that she was nuts. If things had developed, I’d probably end up being a statistic.

Lynn’s Notes:
Once again, I grit my teeth and told a tale that actually happened.

John, John, once again you have caused a beautiful evening to go ‘up in smoke’. It is going to be a quiet ride home and an even quieter night—sleeping on the couch.

yes john is such an ignorant fool. no concept of others, apparently, or his wife. this also doesn’t speak well of Elly to find such a flaming idiot like John worth marrying. John is so past simple, not even childlike. but who knows. John is so insensitive.
