Since its debut in 1979, For Better or For Worse has touched comic strip readers as few cartoons ever do. Cartoonist Lynn Johnston’s eye for detail and her uncanny sense of what real parents and children struggle with daily are a big part of her success. The world has watched the Patterson family grow up in real time, and to many readers, the Pattersons feel like family!
Parents and children alike will relate to the obstacles that the Patterson family faces. Curfews, parent date nights, babysitting, pets and distractions are all hurdles that the Pattersons must overcome in order to enjoy each other as a family. They face the same obstacles that real life families do, which is what makes them so loveable.

And that right there, people, is the difference between men and women. By the way — judgmental much, Elly?

No, John, no!

John keeps digging the hole deeper…lol.. doesn’t have a clue about how badly he’s making Ellie feel. Ellie should get up and walk out…but….John wouldn’t even understand why she did. My mom used to remember every single incident such as this…it blew her self esteem to total shreds. Some women just don’t have the emotional fortitude to ignore this type of incident.

Yes, women complain there is one subject on their mind. But as I was taught by another gentleman women are as bad or worse about the same subject.

@rene tray: yep, we are. And as afficionado states so correctly: married is not dead, you can look, but not touch.. ;-D Personally i don’t mind if my husband looks at other women that way or even comment on them, i do the same with other men..but that may be a cultural difference, as we live in europe.

John, John, John. Men shouldn’t think out loud in front of their wives.

Judging from how that woman is sagging, I’d suggest she get some good underwiring for her dress.

John is being blankety-blank, but isn’t it striking that women are the ones who always complain about someone’s looks or admire someone’s looks publicly. Johnston got that one right when one of the first things Elly did was compare hereself to this other person.

As I recall, Ellie was the one who brought her to his attention. I’d say Ellie is every bit as culpable as John. I also wonder if Lynn didn’t start painting him worse this second time around than she did in the originals.

Ellie should send him over to the table to say Hi and find out who the girl is.

@kfccanada This is the original strip. Lynn did not change it this time around.
