Marty Links was the creator of the comic strip “Emmy Lou” which ran in newspapers all over the world for over 35 years. Marty Links was a pioneer-- a woman cartoonist at a time when the cartoon business was really a boy’s club. For over 40 years, Marty would whisk through the San Francisco Chronicle city room delivering a weekly batch of cartoons with the same gusto as Emmy Lou would.

What’s Emmy Lou looking at? The next 45 she’s planning to play?! Our first record player was a Heathkit that my dad built, that played only one at a time…

When my little girl spotted an old 45 in my collection of “favorite old things,” she called it a cd.

The 45’s hold memories…singing and dancing while it spun to what is now considered an “oldie” – Thank you Emmy Lou for the reminder!

“Marty Monday” here! Marty son-in-law here with a Marty story.
In light of the celebrity discussion last week I thought I’d tell this story. Marty would include various celebrities in her panels/multi-panels. I asked her which one was her most memorable. She said she included Cary Grant in a cartoon and 2 days later he called her to thank her…she totally recognized his distinctive voice. Pleasantly surprised that she was actually a woman he said: “Marty…I thought you were a guy”. And she said: “Yes I am a woman and if you need proof I’ll send you my bust size!”. He then asked her to come to LA for a date. I asked her if she kept that date with him. Her response: “Ricky…it was way to far to drive”! Huhhhh!!
