   I’m curious; was Garcia, as a Spaniard, aware of the negative connotations in the USA of associating fried chicken to Woods? In other words, I’m asking if there was actual racial malice instead of run-of-the-mill taunting after their spat a few weeks before.

   That’s a fair point. It’s almost ridiculously easy for a foreigner to unwittingly say something an American would find offensive- being offended is practically an American pasttime in itself.
   Assuming racism at every turn only makes it harder to find and eliminate the real deal.

    Of course he did. You don’t actually have to be a racist to know how to insult someone with racist remarks. Haveing said that, I don’t know Garcia so I have no idea if he’s biggoted or not.

    Many countries around the world have much less ethnic diversity than the US, and many of the people grow up using racial and ethnic slurs about other people and cultures without even thinking about it, because everyone around them does it. I have heard some of my coworkers in Ireland refer to a Tanzanian colleague as “Darky”, even when addressing him directly.
    However, the fried chicken idea is strictly an American stereotype about the stereotypical African-American diet. Sergio would not have grown up with that in Spain. He picked that up here and therefore must be fully aware of the negative connotations it carries, particularly since Fuzzy Zoeller was called out for it at the Masters several years ago. He meant it to be derogatory.

    Thanks for the info regarding a previous incident which makes it more likely Garcia was aware this was racially sensitive in the USA.
    His apology since has made it appear he was aware but I was willing to give it benefit of the doubt. I’m aware of it because of my exposure to US culture; Garcia probably has had even more exposure to the US culture than me since he often travels & plays there.
    In South Africa a similar remark with chicken would mean nothing.
    Which brings me to the 2nd part of this whole debacle: O’Grady uses the term “coloured”. Again I’m aware that in the US, and the UK and likely Ireland, too (thus O’Grady should have been aware), this has become derogatory, but in South Africa the mixed-race “community” is still commonly known & referred to as being “Coloured” – Blacks are not and never were – although there is a growing movement to abolish the term. I remember mentioning the word “Coloured” in a group which included a few American friends and seeing their faces blanch. I had to break off and explain the local peculiarities. Since then, and especially here in the UK, I’ve been careful to use the term “mixed race” when talking about South African politics to avoid similar reactions.

    
    But, going back to Wolf’s post above, I’ve struggled to explain to Austrians why blacking one’s face is incredibly racist (they traditionally blacken a child’s face to represent Balthazar at Xmas time for door to door carolling). I get blank looks. I understand many Dutch are also struggling to make fellow Dutch understand that blackening one’s face to represent Swart Peter could be offensive to many Dutch.

    
    At any rate, I am now satisfied that Garcia was aware how offensive his words were when he said it.

    Sergio Garcia would never make it as a liberal. He recognized his mistake, apologized immediately, and showed genuine contrition.
