Whenever I can’t think of someone’s name who appears to know me, I ask, “How do you spell your name?” I was so embarrassed when someone once answered: “J-O-H-N.”

I once read that if you can’t remember someone’s name, you should introduce yourself humbly as if you’re the one who’s forgettable, and the other person will likely reciprocate. I’ve tried this and it has yet to work.

P.S. this is why reunions have name badges with your yearbook photo on them. That, and the unending stream of “OMG what was up with my HAIR!” moments.

Yes, badges. Otherwise, “Do I know you?” offered in a querulous tone.

When I went to my 40th high school reunion last year, I didn’t expect anyone to remember me except the 3 people I was there to see but instead there were quite a few people who remembered me.

I look like I did when I graduated from Prospect HS in 1964 except my hair is silver gray and thinner.

I’ve gotten to the point where I’ll just say something along the lines of “I’m terribly sorry, but can I have your name again please?” in the most apologetic way possible. The other person usually then admits that they can’t remember my name either!

    ……………………………………………………
And you said, “I KNOW that — I meant your LAST name.” And he said “S-M-I-T-H.” Right?
