    This would have been more appropriate for yesterday, but…

    It hit me that Alex’s rejection of her mother isn’t true to real life at all. I’ve seen kids whose mom abandoned them like J.J. did with Alex, and pulled stuff much crazier than J.J. did. None of them rejected her like was portrayed with Alex, and the only reason was that’s just not how kids work.

    Well, college is a time of beginning to understand our parents as individuals – ourselves, too. Alex isn’t rejecting J.J., just appreciating Mike.

    And all kids are not the same. I didn’t rebel against my mother as a teenager, and when my father abandoned the family, I couldn’t distance myself from him fast enough. I was relieved to be able to easily stop using the last name he gave me as anything but an initial in the middle of my signature when I married.
