Julie Larson began writing The Dinette Set comic in 1990, then called Suburban Torture, offering a satire on middle class culture. The Dinette Set became syndicated in 1997. When asked where Julie gets all of her ideas, she admits there is only one way to write a daily comic: write about what you know. "I make no bones about who’s really talking in The Dinette Set," says Julie, who is writer, director and cast of The Dinette Set. "If we can’t make fun of ourselves, who will?"

Of course they went for the food. Maybe they actually got a card for the bereaved, at the Dollar Store.

…that sounds just like the food they eat everyday.

But they don’t have to pay for it.

Yeah sad….
It’s soooo sad, to think that their “hostess” (ie. the grieving widow) didn’t have time to fix them a proper meal, after they drove clear across town to bring her a card.
I mean, why have the wake now, when you’re so busy?
Why not wait till next week when you won’t have to be running back and forth to the funeral home and the cemetery?
Then you can give this party the attention it deserves.

Another possible scenario:
No one asks for potluck dishes for a wake… but most people will assume it would be appreciated.
The Pennys don’t “get” anything not explained….
so they show up 2 hours early with nothing to offer.
The widow grabs all the food that’s been spoiling in the fridge during her grief and confusion and “fixes a plate” for the moochers.
She knows they have no interest in the services or in comforting the bereaved relatives, so they’ll soon be gone if she feeds them.

Remember you ARE what you EAT. do they ever read the heart? Maybe Pattie puts it up when they are not looking. Maybe the widow knew they were coming and kept the good food hid till they left, knowing how they were.

When my father in law passed away we all met back at their house after the funeral for a late lunch. My father in laws brother ate like he had not eaten in weeks his first plate was heaping full and he went back for 2nd and 3rds. Everyone commented on it, there was plenty of food and he even took home a “doggie” plate.

A bit confused here… Typically a wake there is coffee and cookies…. It’s after the funeral that lunch is offered…..? ! ?

I have to wonder if they even knew the deceased at all. I would not be surprised to learn that they surf the obits and go to the “best” ones for the free food.
My grandmother had a friend who would go to funerals just for the fun of it, I guess. We to see “Don Giovanni” yesterday. Some funeral!

BTW… The Daily Herald (Northern Illinois) dropped TDS today sighting that it offended some senoirs.
.
The actual problem was that they made it so small that it could no longer be understood… especiall in B&W and with all it’s detail….
.
The good news is it is here at GoComics in all it’s glory… Plus we get to enjoy all the comments made by our Crustwood neighbors…. ! ! !

Oh Gym Shoe. . tsk, tsk. A “good” wake includes all the booze everyone can drink in honor of the deceased of course. And lots of food, usually brought by the visitors. It;s supposed to be a celebration of their life.

Burl took the day off for the Funeral also? Since Joy says they got there “early” they probably bypassed the service after they found out where the memorial luncheon was being held. I’m sure that the card contained their signature and nothing else. What a pair!

Thrown together at the last minute ! Can’t people die at a time to provide better menu planning for the Pennys. Someone needs to slaps these two.

I like the sign on the wall by Adelle Davis. Am I the only one who remembers her?
