“Shoot first, ask questions later”, that worked SO well in Viet Nam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Nicaragua, not to mention Panama, Guatemala, Chile, Argentina, and other more “covert” operations.

Intersting interview with an Iraqi now living in Lebanon who had a good business under Saddam. He noted that while Saddam DID set them back 100 years, the U.S. invasion and “Bush policies” set the country back 300 years! So very true his observation!

I would argue that our overzealous and hasty extraction is what set them back, if at all. If we had a permanent duty station in Iraq, the government would be stabilized and we would have an environment that would encourage free trade and ensure that insurgents knew we weren’t going anywhere and would hinder their meddling. It may have even had the impact of making it “not worth their while,” and they may have moved on to greener pastures.

Wraithkin: it was what Bremmer did under orders from Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al that totally screwed over Iraq. Totally stupid policies, exemplified by Rummy saying all the cultural artifacts destroyed were just the same pickup driving by several times. The whole pack were idiots, and we, and Iraq will be paying for it for decades to come.

No doubt, they did some stupid crap. But the deal was brokered through Obama for the extraction. Specifically, it was agreed that there would be no permanent stationing of troops in Iraq. That’s really what’s causing the destabilization, now that Iran is free to do whatever they want to manipulate Iraq. It’s a shame… all that blood spilled only to have it squandered. That’s the true tragedy here.
