A tithe is not a tax. The tither believes that he is joyfully offering back to God the first fruits. Giving to the government is giving to the government.
Let me understand this, a tithe is generally understood as 10% of one’s income (some would say net but let us assume gross after expenses) which means that the Gasoline Alley garage shows a pretax profit of $100,000.00.Slim and Clovia live in a 2nd floor walkup, cannot afford a car/truck and when was the last time any one saw Gretchen (35yrs old) or Rover (about 30yrs old)? Just asking.
My home congregation encourages people to give “in support of God’s mission…” As one pastor said, “We shovel in, God shovels out. God’s shovel is bigger.” The pledge form also asks us to commit to worship attendance, service, study, prayer, inviting others. We are an active part of our community, especially in terms of service.
