It is a sign of my chemistry- frazzled brain that I immediately thought of a mercury thermometer.

You did notice that the kid said he’s reading an OLD magazine. Could be for, oh, a ‘57 Merc with a huge motor and really gooshy suspension. That’ll bring on motion sickness really quick.

For those old enough: Jesus drove a Plymouth – “…and he drove them from the Temple in his Fury”

Alexikakos: To get back to the cartoon, it is the prolonged peripheral movement while trying to concentrate on reading that causes the motion sickness. Driving, one must notice a large number of things (traffic signs being just one of many) and there is not the contrast.

I used to get sick if I tried to read in a car. I also used to read aloud to my now-wife, then girlfriend in her undergrad years when she was unwinding by doing totally non-school things, like quilting. On our first long car trip, I compensated by glancing at the book, committing a few lines to short-term memory, and reciting it while looking up at the road, repeat as necessary. Before the trip was over, I no longer got sick, and now read to my wife and kids.
