It’s because he thinks in terms of the interesting, unpredictable, and even wacky ways that children can interpret language, something that most of them do. But we tend to forget about those idiosyncrasies as we get older, so we have Ruthie to remind us of how (inadvertently?) inventive a child’s manner of thinking can be.
